This exclusive privately guided tour takes in all the major sites that the North Island has to offer. You’ll see geysers and hot pools in Rotorua as well as some of our beautiful national parks and rainforests. Highlights include: Rotorua and its Maori Culture and volcanic activity, the stunning Waitomo glow-worm caves, and city culture of Auckland along with a visit to several of our favorite special locations and majestic Lord of the Rings spots.

Day 1 – Auckland arrival + Drive to Rotorua – 230km (3 hour drive)

You will be met at the airport by one of our friendly guides, where your epic journey through Middle Earth begins! Today we will head south from the busy metropolis of Auckland towards the lakeside town of Rotorua, famous for its bubbling mud pools, hot springs and Maori culture. Along the way we will visit our first and northern-most filming site from The Lord of the Rings Trilogy; the ancient watchtower of Weathertop, where Frodo was attacked by the Black Riders and the only remaining film set from the trilogy; the picturesque, peaceful village of Hobbiton! We will take a 2 hour guided tour through Hobbiton and its many hobbit holes, beautiful green rolling hills, vegetable gardens (real and fake) and even stop for a Southfarthing Ale at the Green Dragon! In the afternoon/evening we will head to Rotorua and enjoy a traditional Maori hangi and cultural performance.

Your luxury remote accommodation for the next 2 nights is set on the shores of picturesque Lake Tarawera and feature panoramic views of the lake and magnificent volcanoes.

Day 2 – Rotorua

This morning we will explore Rotorua including a tour of the Government Gardens, Lakefront and a possible visit to Ohinemutu Maori Church as well as a walk around Te Puia to explore mud pools and Pohutu Geyser. This afternoon is free for leisure activities and Options include: Rotorua Gondola and Luge, a trip to Rotorua Agrodome a walk through the redwood forest or perhaps a cruise on Volcanic Flight over White Island (all optional activities will be booked by your guide). Tonight enjoy a spectacular New Zealand cuisine accompanied by fine wines in an elegant setting.

Day 3 – Rotorua to Tongariro National Park – 195 km (2.5 hour drive)

Heading south through ‘Thermal wonderland’ our first point of call for the day is Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland – A Wonderland of Stunning Geothermal Activity. We will visit New Zealand’s largest thermal mud pool, sinter terraces and stunning hot and cold pools of many different colours. Heading south stopping at the mind-blowingly powerful Huka Falls en route, we reach Lake Taupo, New Zealand’s largest lake. Winding our way around Lake Taupo we reach Tongariro National Park where we may wish to take a hike in the National Park itself, One of The Road Trip’s favourites is 2 hours long featuring native bush, volcanic views and stunning waterfalls. In clear weather there is a great opportunity to spot New Zealand’s 3 most active volcanoes – Tongariro, Ruapehu and Ngaurauhoe (also known as Mt Doom). This is also home to several LOTR filming locations, including areas used to portray Mordor, the rocky wasteland of Emyn Muil and the stunning volcano of Mount Ngaurauhoe, known by LOTR fans as the one and only Mount Doom! As most of these sites cannot be reached by road, we will leave you in the capable hands of Heliview, who will take you on a scenic helicopter flight, giving you the best views of these secluded filming locations. Mt Ruapehu also features fantastic skiing with great beginner’s slopes.

This evening we will enjoy a nice meal and a good rest at the picturesque Chateau Tongariro. The Chateau is situated in the heart of the national park and boasts stunning views of the volcanoes.

Day 4 – Tongariro National Park to Mt Huia Farmstay – 130km (1.5 hour drive)

Today we will drive to Mangaweka, where you will be taken on a full day rafting trip down the Rangitikei and Moawhango Rivers; entitled “Grand Canyons of the Rangitkei.” This tour is arranged by the river safety specialists for LOTR filming in this area, who will take you on your own breath taking rafting trip through gorges of enormous proportions, drifting through dramatic landscapes which portrayed the stunning “River Anduin.”

Tonight you will be staying on a farm stay in the lower North Island area of Mangaweka on a property known as Mt Huia Hill Country Farm. This is a great experience to experience New Zealand Sheep Farming and your experience includes a tour of the property and scrumptious home cooked dinner and breakfasts with the family.

Day 5 – Mt Huia to Waitomo – 260km (3.25 hour drive)

This morning we head north through both the Waikato and King Country areas to reach Waitomo, New Zealand’s most extensive underground caving network . We will take a 1 hour guided walking tour through the spectacular caves and see the impressive glow-worms that light up the cave roof and stalagmite rock formations in a walk. From there we will spend the day in the Waitomo area exploring various nature walks and spectacular waterfalls.

From here drive a further 45 minutes to spectacular Lake Karapiro Lodge. Tonight enjoy spectacular cuisine at the lodge with spectacular views.

Day 6 – Lake Karapiro to Auckland 145km (2 hour drive)

This morning after further Lake Karapiro area, we take the drive north to Auckland where you will be transferred to Auckland International Airport. We trust that you have had a memorable exclusive tour with us. – Meals B
