Sail across to New Zealand’s 3rd largest Island to experience healthy populations of native birdlife, beautiful virgin native forests, fishing opportunities like no other and ultimate tranquility and relaxation at Observation Rock Lodge, featuring a treetop balcony and outdoor bathtub under the stars. We think it’s high time you explored Rakiura/Stewart Island.
Upon arrival at Invercargill Airport, a private driver will collect you and take you to Bluff Ferry Terminal for your 1 hour ferry across Foveaux Strait to Oban, Stewart Island. Along the journey you can hope to see the glorious Royal Albatross soaring near your boat, as well as the Tītī/Muttonbird. Upon arrival at the Stewart Island ferry you will be greeted by your hosts from your lodge and taken the short journey to check in. The afternoon is free to explore the village of Oban and nearby nature walks. Enjoy a variety of tranquil forest walks. Relax tonight at your lodge with an outdoor bath on the balcony and enjoy the native birdsong which surrounds you. Tonight you will enjoy a specially prepared 3-4 course dinner at your lodge.
Today you will experience Stewart Island’s smaller neighbouring island; Ulva Island, to enjoy a half day discovering native flora and fauna and bird life. On this predator free reserve, view ancient podocarp trees, lush tree ferns, delicate ground ferns, mosses and orchids. Learn about practical and medicinal uses of trees and plants while listening out for kaka, the exquisite notes of the bellbird and the wonderfully varied calls of the Tui. Watch lime-green parakeet flying amongst the treetops. Glimpse rare saddleback and yellowhead and try to spot New Zealand’s smallest bird; the rifleman. The tour concludes with a short road trip around Stewart Island with the chance to learn a bit more about life on the Island. The overall trip is about 4 hours in duration. This afternoon/evening you can relax and further enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of Stewart Island. Tonight you will enjoy a specially prepared 3-4 course dinner at your lodge.
This morning you will head out on the water with Tequila Fishing Charters. Using traditional hand lines, you will be able to fish for your own Blue Cod to take home. Observe the workings of a local commercial fishing operation with demonstration on how to prepare, set & retrieve cod pots and process the catch once landed. Following this you have the afternoon free to enjoy Stewart Island. Your bespoke printed travel guide will have lots of suggestions for nature walks and other activities on the Island. Tonight you will enjoy the experience of a lifetime which very few Kiwis (human version) have experienced – viewing a Kiwi in the wild! At dusk you will cruise across to Little Glory Cove. As daylight diminishes, venture by torchlight through native forest to Ocean Beach, where you will get to see the Southern Brown kiwi (Rakiura Tokoeka). The boat will return you to Stewart Island following the experience.
Today you will take the ferry back to Bluff and will be transferred back to Invercargill Airport by Jayride.
