Today you’ll arrive at Bluff Ferry Terminal for your 1 hour ferry across Foveaux Strait to Oban, Stewart Island (transfers to ferry terminal not included). Along the journey you can hope to see the glorious Royal Albatross soaring near your boat, as well as the Tītī/Muttonbird. Upon arrival at the Stewart Island ferry you will check in to Stewart Island Lodge, very close to the wharf. Today is free to explore the village of Oban and nearby tranquil forest walks. Relax tonight at your lodge.
This morning you will enjoy a group mini-bus tour of Stewart Island. Gain an entertaining insight into New Zealand’s southernmost community, and learn about the history and environment of Stewart Island. You will have plenty of time to get off the bus for photo stops and short walks. Highlights include a visit to the gateway to Rakiura National Park at Lee Bay and Observation Rock with its stunning views of Paterson Inlet. Following this you have the afternoon free to enjoy Stewart Island. Your bespoke printed travel guide will have lots of suggestions for nature walks and other activities on the Island.
Today you will discover Stewart Island from the water. Enjoy a leisurely cruise of beautiful Paterson Inlet viewing hidden coves and unspoilt beaches. Along the way learn about the early Māori history and European settlement including whaling. Your skipper and nature guide will provide detailed commentary throughout the cruise and are happy to answer any questions. While on board, keep a lookout for fur seals, penguins and other wildlife, as sightings are common. Then disembark at Ulva Island, a renowned wildlife sanctuary for a 45-minute guided walk with a specialist nature guide. View rare plants and rich birdlife, including the inquisitive weka, which are often seen on the beach. For the remainder of the cruise around Paterson Inlet, relax on board and enjoy the coastal scenery before heading back to base. Tonight you will enjoy the experience of a lifetime which very few Kiwis (human version) have experienced – viewing a Kiwi in the wild! At dusk you will cruise across to Little Glory Cove. As daylight diminishes, venture by torchlight through native forest to Ocean Beach, where you will get to see the Southern Brown kiwi (Rakiura Tokoeka). The boat will return you to Stewart Island following the experience.
Today you will take the ferry back to Bluff.
