8km – Lake Hayes Trail Loop (Grade 3 – Intermediate)
The Lake Hayes Trail is one of the most scenic short loops in the Queenstown trail network and is very popular with walkers and cyclists. The lake is often very calm, producing incredible reflections of the mountain ranges that surround it. From Stoneridge Estate cross SH6 and cycle down to meet the trail beside the Lake. Turn left
and cycle the trail in the clockwise direction – this is easier! The trail around Lake Hayes offers exquisite mountain and lake vistas, a boardwalk protecting local wildlife, historic cottages and a close-up view of some of the area’s most notable homes. Be sure to look out for wild gooseberries and other fruit trees along the way.
You will be picked up from Stoneridge Estate at 11.00am and transported to Arrowtown. One of the most picturesque settlements in New Zealand, Arrowtown sits alongside the gold-bearing Arrow River and below Queenstowns magnificent peaks. The town was established in 1862, during the height of the Otago gold rush. The settlement grew quickly as pioneers constructed cottages, shops, hotels and churches, more than 60 of which can still be seen today. A special highlight is the Chinese settlement at the edge of the river. Built by Chinese miners from 1868, this area of restored shelters and buildings paints a picture of earlier times.
Cycle 14km – Arrow River Bridges Trail – Arrowtown to Kawarau Bridge (Grade 2 – Easy)
Your journey starts down by Dudleys Cottage and the Arrowtown Chinese Settlement on the true right of the willow-lined Arrow River. The trail heads west along the banks of the Arrow River, a river of many moods, sometimes tranquil, often rushing over rocks and bluffs, then widening to limpid pools. One of the most popular photo stops is midway across the awe-inspiring Southern Discoveries suspension bridge. A destination in itself and what a view! Across the bridge, you will ride past
quaint cottages and grazing horses down Whitechapel country lane, “a landscape painting straight out of a picture book. Stop at the Knights Family Underbridge and take in spectacular downstream view of where the Arrow River drops into the gorge. Yet another impressive feat of engineering, the graceful 80-metre Edgar Suspension Bridge is guaranteed to deliver gasps of appreciation at the views from its midpoint down into the Arrow Gorge. Once you have crossed the Edgar Bridge, be sure to stop at the Wall of Recognition and offer up a thanks to the landowners and Queenstown community who had the vision to help make the Queenstown Trail a reality. Getting across busy State Highway 6 is a piece of cake via the Barfoot Tunnel – and onto a part of the trail which follows the original goldminers road into Queenstown. Breathe in the thyme-scented mountain air as you make your way over the historic Kawarau Suspension Bridge, home to the worlds first commercial bungy jumping operation. The AJ Hackett Bungy Centre is a stunning piece of architecture, well worth a visit. On the Bungy viewing deck there are many informative panels about the history of the area that are well worth a read.
Cycle 9km – Gibbston River Wine Trail – Kawarau Bridge to Cargo Brewery (Grade 2 – Easy)
As you leave the AJ Hackett car park follow the signs to the Gibbston River Trail. From here, your journey takes you into dramatic wine country, where you are spoilt for choice between vistas, wine and delicious cuisine! Take your time in Gibbston, there is so much to see, taste and eat!
You will be picked up from the Cargo Brewery at 4.45pm and transported to Stoneridge Estate.
